Most of all, Maido unseats Central, the Lima restaurant from husband-and-wife team Virgilio Martinez and Pia León, which held the title for three years. Yet, Central is now second on the list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. Then, it also fell one spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2017, now ranked number 5. However, Maido is currently number 8 on the full World’s 50 Best list.

In addition, D.O.M., chef Alex Atala’s São Paulo restaurant known for its use of native Brazilian ingredients, earns the number 3 slot this year. On their side, Enrique Olvera’s Pujol in Mexico City and Santiago restaurant Boragó round out the top five.

Moreover, the organization, which grants an award for the Best Female Chef, already announced that award for Latin America, as well as a lifetime achievement award and the One to Watch award for the region. Indeed Chef Leonor Espinosa, of Eater essential Bogotá restaurant Leo (number 18 on the Latin America list) is Latin America’s Best Female Chef. Furthermore, Guillermo González Beristáin of Pangea in Monterrey was awarded the Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award. Last but not least, chef Felipe Bronze’s Oro in Rio De Janeiro is one to watch in 2017.
