Bangkok’s first Michelin Guide is now released!

No three Michelin stars, three restaurants with 2 Michelin stars

First of all, the Michelin Guide Bangkok may have taken a while to arrive in Asia’s street food capital, but it’s finally here. Indeed, the debut edition of the Red Book has awarded stars to 16 restaurants and eateries across the city. Indian-born chef Gaggan Anand’s eponymous restaurant is among the three restaurants with two stars. On top,  French restaurant Le Normandie at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Mezzaluna at lebua Bangkok are the other two.

Fourteen other restaurantsawarded one Michelin star

Indeed, restaurants including NAHM, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Bo.Lan and Savelberg have been awarded one star. Also on this list is wildly popular street food outlet Jay Fai (or Jae Fai), run by a tireless septuagenarian lady who gave the place its name. Furthermore, as many as 35 restaurants have been presented the Bib Gourmand. Yet, an honour reserved for restaurants that serve “exceptionally good food at moderate prices”. No restaurant in Bangkok has been awarded the maximum three stars. (Read: All about Michelin star chefs)

The story of the evening though is chef Gaggan Anand’s run at the top

Most of all, his restaurant in downtown Bangkok, which serves progressive Indian cuisine, features on the list of World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and has topped the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants twice in a row. In an Instagram post celebrating the achievement, the chef said the stars were a “recognizance of eating with hands and licking the plate” (sic). Ironically, Gaggan plans to shut shop by 2020 and move to Tokyo to start another chapter of his culinary journey.

With the Michelin Guide Bangkok, the march of the Red Book continues through Asia. Over the last few years, the guide has inaugurated editions in Singapore, Shanghai, Seoul, Osaka, Hong Kong, Kyoto and Tokyo, which has more Michelin-rated restaurants than any other city in the world.
